The Substance is not entirely science fiction: Aging does have a way of asserting itself first on our hands. This collection of photographs celebrates that fact, through side by side photos of jewelry models using their own hands to promote items for sale on Facebook Marketplace. These striking pairings remind us how traditional beauty standards and advertising depictions airbrush away any sign of aging, and that bringing visibility to hand models outside those norms requires a DIY approach.
